Windows 10 Creators Update is breaking Borlands. Update is breaking Borlands Database Desktop. And don't ship with the latest Delphi and RAD.
Recently passed on Windows7 like at first problems was not, all programs on Delphi 6 it is normal, and here when you open dbf-ku through Database Desktop 7.0, instead of Russian letters - a scribble. Already in that only did not change HKCU Software Borland DBD 7.0 Preferences Properties SystemFont = 'Fixedsys' or 'System' [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Nls CodePage] '1252' = 'c_1251.nls' In BDE all is normal Drivers->Native->DBASE->Langdriver->dBASE RUS cp866. At what when the program you open, letters Russian are normally displayed.
A glitch only with Database Desktop At whom such was and that with it to do.
Avoid to use the BDE. This database engine is deprecated since more than ten years. In case you insist to use the BDE, then you need to redirect 'netdir' to a folder with write access. An alternate would be 'C: Users Public Documents'. The tool Database Desktop should work, at least I've never seen any troubles. Sadly it's unknown if there was any error message.
An error description like 'I did not get it run' is too less for the most cases to find a workaround. But you can try to lower the compatibility mode of the executable 'dbd32.exe'.
Note: The documentation is somewhat out-dated, because it's for Windows XP, but this features still exists in Windows 10. Sadly I don't know if Windows Home would allow to play with the setting. Another way to keep going older software is to use a virtual machine. Download and install VirtualBox.
Windows XP should work with the BDE without troubles. This OS has a small foot print and starts very fast, but it's recommended to have the virtual disk on a SSD or at least a very fast harddisk. Note: It's highly recommended to block the Internet for a virtual machine which is running Windows XP, because there are too much security issues.
Click to expand. There are a few things you can do. • Replace the BDE. For example, for Absolute Database is the source code available, what means everythings compiles into the application an there are not DLL to deploy. Also there is a database tool which is available as source and therefore could be adapted in any way.
Sadly Absolute Database is a commercial, but just take a look. • Use virtual machine like Virtualbox which can be found here. Install Windows XP which has a small footprint of nearly 4GiB and it starts very fast.
Define a common folder which points to the database you need to maintain. Now you can edit Pardox tables from inside the Virtual Machine on the local host. Useless to say that the Internet connection must be switched off, because the OS is out-dated and there are no security updates anymore. • Use a replacement for Database Desktop like this one.
